Why Private Utility Locating Matters
A standard 811 request helps identify public utilities, but it often does not cover private lines beyond the meter, transformer, service connection, or other handoff point. That means a property owner, contractor, or excavator may still have buried private utilities in the work area even after a public utility locate has been requested.
That is especially important on properties with detached structures, older improvements, added services, septic-related work areas, irrigation, long underground runs, or utility routes that do not follow the path a property owner expects.

Many Washington properties have detached garages, shops, barns, sheds, pump houses, or other outbuildings with underground service running to them. Those paths are not always obvious from the surface, especially on older or larger properties.
Drainage, Trenching, and Site Improvements
Drainage work, driveway improvements, retaining walls, trenching, grading, utility repair, and general site work can all create risk when buried private utilities cross the work area.
